MINGARA PRESENTS

PHOTOGRAPH

Mingara Director, Keith Crossman, was joined by several of his fellow Board Members when they presented a studio photograph of the 2008 Under 16 Premiers recently.

Under 16 coach, John Grose was on hand to accept the very detailed photograph which will gain a prize spot in the clubroom wall.

FREO SCOUT TO LOOK AT

K/VALE HEAT PLAYERS

A leaked report has revealed that a Sydney based Fremantle Dockers Talent Scout will be checking out the four Killarney Vale players selected in the Northern Heat Under 18 Side.

The team will continue training after new year and play a series of matches at the Coffs Harbour Carnival in the same month.

TRAINING BEGINS

The club started it's first of two before season training runs at the North Entrance Beach under new coach, Dave Dunning.

There was a smattering of players from the three grades in attendance while Dunning and Under 18s coach, Todd Clarke, put them through a routine which included a number of new drills and exercises.

Besides the players a number of officials were on-hand with the new movie camera capturing every moment of the evening's activities - apart from the adjournment to the bottom pub at The Entrance.

A further run at the same venue will be held next Wednesday at 6.30pm followed by a Christmas gathering at the club on Friday 19.

Training will re-commence in the new year on Tuesday 20 January.

THE PROFESSOR CAN FIX YOUR COMPUTER

In days when fixing your computer or getting an upgrade can become a bit expensive, the club has organised with a local, Mick 'The Professor' Byrne, to come on board and offer his services.

He lives at Berkeley Vale, works out of his garage and is a highly regarded computer engineer with a degree to go with it..  Mick can be contacted on 0410338996.

FOUR MAKE

NORTHERN HEAT TEAM

Four of the club's Under 18 players have been selected in the Northern Heat Under 18 Team which will now contest the state Under 18 Championships in Coffs Harbour in late January.

The Northern Heat is a regional representative side and second step for players to gain further representative honours.  It is the pathway for these young men to bigger things in their football.

Bryce Singleton, Luke Freemantle, Hugh Wells and Daniel Lloyd were the four from the Killarney Vale Club who were chosen.

They have been training with the Central Coast Under 18 side on a weekly basis since October and today competed in the selection trials for the Northern Heat team held at Teralba.

The other sides the Heat team was selected from included Newcastle, North Coast and Central West NSW.

The Heat will now train under coach, Scott Harrington until the Coffs Harbour carnival which will involve eight teams from all round NSW.  In the past this series has been held over the Australia Day Weekend where  a NSW Team will be chosen to contest the National Championships in mid 2009.

CLUB ADOPTS A YOUTH POLICY

Following several meetings of the club's enthusiastic match committee a decision has been taken that they will concentrate on youth in an attempt to continue building the club into a strong and competitive organisation.

"I had watched what happens in the club over the past year since I have been here"  senior coach, Dave Dunning said "and I can see there is a lot of scope to work with and while we have some experience in our ranks I want to use as many young guys as I can to play in the senior side."

"I would welcome any young guy who wants to play with the Bombers and I can promise that everyone who tries out with the club will get every opportunity to perform."

The club's administration backs the move saying it will lay the foundation for the club for many years to come.

SOLID GROUP BACK IN CHARGE

Most of the incumbent members of all three committees at the football club were returned unopposed in an act of overwhelming support at today's Annual General Meeting.

Before a healthy crowd of supporters and players, the club declared a small operating profit on the year's activities but more importantly said that they were consolidating on a good year and working towards on-field success in both senior and junior divisions in 2009.

The Bomber's executive committee will again be headed up by life member, Ian Granland with another life member, Graham Edgley as Administration Manager and Russ Stimson the Finance Director.

DUNNING APPOINTED COACH

Dave Dunning has been appointed first grade coach for the 2009 season.

The club is now in a position to announce his appointment following weeks of delicate negotiations with his employer: AFL(NSW/ACT).  Dunning is the local AFL Development Officer on the Central Coast and initially it was thought that his coaching could compromise his employment.  It now turns out that other development officers throughout the state are in a similar position.

Dunning played most of his football with Sydney's Pennant Hills Club as an outstanding on-baller.  In 2007 he played on the Gold Coast and this season signed up with the Bombers where he has proved most successful finishing third in the clubs best and fairest.

He has already flagged two training sessions before Christmas both at North Entrance Beach.  The first will be on Wednesday 10 December and another the following week on the 17 December commencing at 6:30pm.  Training will then continue in earnest in mid January.

Contact with Dave can be made on 0414198213.

CLUB TO CONCENTRATE ON UNDER 18s

The club executive have already started to plan for next year and in particular, the Under 18 side.

They have shown concern at the general skill level of boys coming out of Under 18s and moving into senior football and have begun their journey into improving the situation with the appointment of Todd Clarke as coach.

Todd spent last season with the Wyong Lakes club after moving to the area from Adelaide.  He is very keen on his football and in particular, coaching.  At a meeting with members of the club executive and the Assistance Club Director of coaching, Bob Barnetson, this week they outlined a plan for 2009.

There it was confirmed that the club will concentrate their energies on the Under 18s as a beginning to introduce a better and more structured approach to coaching right across the club and in particular in the junior ranks.

Issues discussed for the Under 18s included training, facilities, equipment, recruiting, training programmes and regimes, staff etc.  Amongst other things it was decided to hold an information night for players and their parents at the beginning of 2009.

The club is well on the way to improving their on-field performance and will throw all their resources behind their plan to bolster coaching and instruction to the junior players.

A similar plan is currently being developed for senior football with the match committee working on releasing details before Christmas.

SNELLING

WINS CLUB B&F

Tim Snelling, the club's strong 28 year old ruckman won the 2008 Best & Fairest in a tight finish revealed at the annual presentation night held at the Bay Sports Club.

Snelling, a schoolteacher, has been in and out of the Bombers side since his debut in 2002 the same year he gained selection in the BDAFL Rep side.

A big strong athlete who knows no boundaries, Snelling, was the teams power house this year and it told on their  fortunes late in the season when an injury put him out of action for the last three games.

He won the award with 43 votes just ahead of 2004 winner, Jason Edgley on 39 and Dave Dunning on 38.

The Reserve Grade was won by popular former secretary and president, Dan Bembrick on 53 votes.  He also won the league reserve grade B&F this year.

Bembrick, who flew in from Queensland especially for the event, was an easy winner for the award.  His closest rivals were Alex Wells on 34 and last years winner, Rus Stimson who 32 polled votes.

He spoke passionately about his time with the Bombers and encouraged the younger players to concentrate on their football and work hard to gain a first grade spot in 2009.

The Under 18 award was won by Brendan Lewis who surged from the middle of the pack mid-season to win by a fairly comfortable margin on 61 votes, nineteen in front of his nearest rival Bryce Singleton with Hugh Wells in third place picking up 39 votes.

Corey Shackleton was awarded the Mingara Player of the Year Award with Tom Aafjes a popular winner of Club Person of the Year Award.

CLUB TO INTRODUCE NEW

COACHING STRATEGY

The club will hold a meeting on Tuesday Night (14 Oct.) with all 2009 club coaches invited to attend to discuss several issues for next season.

One will be the appointment of a Club Director of Coaching  who's job will be to mentor, monitor and assist all coaches within the club, both junior and senior.

This has been on the drawing board for some time but now after 12 months with the new administrative system within the club having found its feet the executive felt it was high time to take it another step forward and begin a program of 'coaching the coaches'.

For too long the club has faced the situation of junior players generally being poorly skilled which boils down to them being poorly coached.  So when they begin to reach maturity only the exceptionally talented have an inkling to move into the senior ranks with the majority of the others either move out of the game or give it away when they find they are not competitive after they enter the senior ranks.

Club president Ian Granland said for too long the club has put up with this situation with really no alternatives but now with it growing and more people coming on board it provides more opportunities to properly develop players.

"Over the years I have seen many very keen young men playing senior footy who just don't have the skills.  Its not their fault but the fault of the club and consequently on the field these players find it very difficult to match their opponents.  We want to change that" Granland said.

"We find this a lot in reserve grade and certainly in the Black Diamond Football League, apart from this season, we have been far from competitive over the years."

"Success on the field is critical to our existence and I don't know if many people appreciate that.  If you have success there you attract more players, more sponsors and supporters.  Everyone loves a winner and we have to ensure that we capitalise on every opportunity which presents itself."

"We can't just have players turn up each year just to 'play football'.  I know it's a just a sport but we have to win. Other clubs in the league have shown how success breeds success.  Just look at the top four since the competition started."

     JACKIE APPOINTED

       GRANTS OFFICER

Former senior club secretary, Jackie Meaney, has been appointed to the new position of 'Grants Officer' for the football club.

Following an increase in available grants within the community the club has taken the positive step of appointing a person to monitor and where necessary apply for grants which can benefit the club.

For the most part none of the grants involve actual money.  They have become increasingly available from large corporate organisations who see a benefit in distributing some of their profits throughout the community organisations in this manner.

Jackie has already targeted some potential grant areas for the club.

BOMBERS TAKE

UNDER 16 FLAG

In a gutsy effort at the Adelaide Street Oval before a large crowd, the Under 16 team won a gutsy grand final over Terrigal Avoca 12.10 (82) to 9.9 (63).

This was the first junior premiership for the club since 1998.

Western Bulldogs Scholarship player, Daniel Lloyd was awarded player of the game.

Initially it was poor kicking that let the Bombers down in the first quarter.  They had their chances in front of goal but could only manage 1.6 which allowed their opposition to take a slight lead at the first change.

In the second term the team went up a gear.  Their tenacity and desire for the ball gave them  the strength which was needed when they piled on six goals to overwhelm the minor premiers and hold a commanding lead at half time.

It was this quarter that Daniel Lloyd was in a class of his own.  He took some sensational marks and kicked ever so accurately from at times very wide distances.

The Panthers came back in the third quarter.  Several errors and poor discipline by the Bombers allowed them to get back into the game and at one stage the scores were tied at 63 apiece before the local side were able to kick away.

The last quarter was set the stage for a thrilling finish.

Nathan Higgins in the ruck was cramping but he too proved a tower of strength along with the captain, Travis Thone-Kain who continually shot the ball into attack for their forwards.

Three goals in the final term sealed the game for Killarney Vale who went finished their season on the best high possible.

Killarney Vale 1.6 7.7 9.9 12.10 (82)
Terrigal Avoca 2.5 4.7 7.8 9.9 (63)
Goals: Daniel Lloyd 6, Aiden Greentree 2, Travis Thone-Kain, Brendan Cousins, Jack Nancarrow, Jake Dean 1 each.
Best: Daniel Lloyd, Travis Thone-Kain, Nathan Higgins, Angus Baldwin, Brendan Cousins, Aiden Whymark.

       The Under 16 Premiership Team
The Team:  Corbin Bond, Daniel Lloyd, Travis Thone-Kain (capt), Edward Nichols, Jessie Jaumzems, Jessie Conley, Aiden Greentree, Aidan Whymark, Kiren Sattler, Angus Baldwin , Daniel Dickson, Dylan Everard, Nathan Higgins, Reece Newman, Paul Blain, Jarrod Craig, Jake Dean, Jack Nancarrow, Brendan Cousins, Matt Starkey, Rowan Ritchens, Daniel Cartwirght.

DAN WINS

LEAGUE B & F

Dan Bembrick has won the the Black Diamond Football League's Reserve Grade Best and Fairest Medal with 22 votes after leading throughout the count.

This is the 32 year old Bendick's second season in the reserves and because of his superb play the team led the competition for most of the season only to see injuries upset the side at the bottom end of the year.

He has announced that he is moving to the Gold Coast within weeks to take up a new position within the mining supply company he works for and says he wants to play football with a local club.  Bombers officials have indicated that he may well now be better suited to a Master Rules Club in the area!!

Bendick (minus medal) is pictured here with a worse for wear Takeout at the league function.

Rus Stimson was the only other Killarney Vale player to figure in the top 20 in reserve grade.

Newcastle City's Luke Rawnsley won the first grade medal with 28 votes.  Dane Amidy on 13 and Rick White on 9 votes the only two players from the Bombers to get in the top twenty players.

Unfortunately the club did not get a player in the top 20 in the Under 18s.

Full details of the voting will be released over the next few days.

BAY SPORTS CLUB

SUPPORTS BOMBERS

The Bay Sports Club has decided to get behind the Bombers as it's major sponsor for 2008.  The club, which was formerly known as the Bateau Bay Bowling Club and since taken over by Canterbury Bulldogs, are keen to involve clubs like ours in their community programme.

Killarney Vale Bombers are keen to foster a further association with the Sports Club and have already discussed additional events and other functions with Sports Club Officials.
