Q1. Where is Killarney Vale?
(map in ground & clubrooms page)
A1. Killarney Vale is situated on the Central Coast in the state of New South Wales, Australia, between Sydney and Newcastle.
On a map, it is located at the southern end of Tuggerah Lakes, approximately 1.3 km west of the Pacific Ocean.(checkout
our 'Ground & Clubrooms' page - wait for the map to load)
The local government area is Wyong Shire Council, with a population of about 130,000.
Q2. What do you mean by the ‘Central Coast'?
A2. The Central Coast is a region rather than a town or city with a total population of over
300,000. The nearest best known
centre is Gosford.
Years ago the area was considered the holiday spot for Sydney residents.
There are many pretty beaches and holiday
centres which Sydneyites still take advantage of for their recreation time.
Thousands of people have relocated
permanently to the Central Coast from Sydney etc., because it is close to the beach, the cost of housing
is reasonable and it has an enjoyable life style.
The demographics of the area show that well over 95% of the residents
are at least second and third generation Australians, the vast majority being of Anglo-Saxon/Celtic origin.
The area has developed from small villages or hamlets in part of country NSW to an inter-urban area where these villages have grown into suburbs with the housing now embracing right across the town names.
Basically the area covers two(+) federal electorates, Dobell and Robertson and five state electorates: The Entrance (ours), Wyong, Peats,
Gosford and part of Swansea. There are two local government areas: Wyong and
Gosford.
The area is one of the highest population growth regions in Australia.
Q3. What are the main industries?
A3. Industries are diverse. It would be safe to say that there are no heavy industrial areas on the Central Coast. There are though, many manufacturing plants which have relocated from Sydney, ie Masterfoods, Sanitarium etc.
Because of the population growth and expansion, the housing industry
remains one of the main employers.
Many (est. over 50,000) people commute to Sydney to work daily.
Q4. What type of employment opportunities are there?
A4. There are all sorts. A check of the employment columns in
a recent edition of the Central Coast Express-Advocate, the biggest local
newspaper, displayed a total of 248 vacancies right across the employment spectrum.
The club would be silly to guarantee any jobs, mainly because the employer would not be aware what type of person he is putting on. However we can give leads and assistance in employment.
Q5. What about accommodation?
A5. Again, the club will not provide accommodation but can help in securing a house or flat. Experience has shown us that any lease etc. must be
taken out in the lessees name with him/her being responsible.
Weekly rents range from about $180-$210 for a 3 bedroom brick house or the like. A self contained granny flat would go for about $70-$80 p/w.
Q6. What is local transport like?
A6. The area is served by a fast and regular electric train service which passes from Sydney thru to Newcastle. There are 10 train stations on the Central Coast, from Woy Woy in the south to Wyong in the north.
The local station is Tuggerah and a train to Sydney’s Central Station
takes approx. 1hr 20 minutes in an air conditioned double decker electric train. This is the standard mode of rail travel.
The F3 freeway also passes thru the Central Coast. It is the main north-south roadway and a two and sometimes three lane expressway which links the outer suburbs of Newcastle to Sydney.
Driving time to say, the Sydney Cricket Ground from Killarney Vale under normal circumstances would be 1.25 hours.
The freeway is about 10km west of Killarney Vale on a pretty direct route. Otherwise there are many
private local bus services and taxis etc.
Q7. What about shopping?
A7. There are many shopping
centres on the Central Coast. Whilst there is a suburban type shopping centre at Killarney Vale, with about
30 or so shops, the closest large shopping mall is at Bateau Bay, which is the next suburb.
It boasts Coles, Woolworths,
K-Mart and 65+ specialty shops with more being currently added.
The next biggest is at Tuggerah, near the exit to/from the F3 Expressway. It has Woolworths, Franklins, Big W, David Jones, probably over 100 other specialty shops and restaurants etc.
We are well served with shopping centres.
Q8. What about entertainment?
A8. We get TV from Sydney and Newcastle with the regionals, ie Prime etc. So we are very well served with fee to air TV. There is also Foxtell.
The area has
three commercial FM radio stations and a local ABC station. There are numerous community stations.
There are several cinema
centres on the Central Coast and a local theatre at The Entrance.
Q9. What league does the club play in?
A9. The Club has played in the Central Coast Football League since it’s inception in 1978. In 2000 however the league joined together with the Newcastle Football League
to form the Black Diamond Football League which has a total of 10 clubs.
The Black Diamond AFL Inc.
(www.bdafl.com.au) comprises first, reserve and under 18
grades.
Newcastle is about 1 hours drive north and the furtherest club in their league is Nelson Bay, which is probably
about another 30 mins drive. We would probably only play that club once, away. (Checkout our competition page for all league details)
Q10. How many players does Killarney Vale have?
A10.
In 2005 we fielded a total of 62 senior players and 23 under 18.
Q11. How professional is the club?
A11. We like to think we are reasonably professional. We have our own clubrooms, which include: bar, clubroom, canteen, gym, offices, boardroom, kitchen and meal area, coaches and timekeepers rooms and storage.
A photograph of the clubroom is on the front page of the website.
We have as many on-field staff as we can muster and we have a reasonable supporter base.
Player payments is not an issue we have pursued
but are open to negotiation.
Q12. What are the crowds like?
A12. We would get 200+ at a good home game which isn’t bad in our league.
Q13. What days do you play?
A13.
Saturdays. Although we have good enough field lighting for night
matches.
Q14. Have you got juniors ?
A14. We have Under 16, Under 14, Under 12, Under 10 teams plus Auskick.
They play of a Saturday in a separate competition.
Q15. What percentage of your ex-juniors make up the senior team?
A15.
In 2005 about 50%, give or take.
Q16. How successful has the club
been?
A16. We were premiers in 1981-82, 1986-87, 1997-98 = six.
Runners-up in: 1980, 83, 85, 90, 92, 99 & 2005.
Since we formed in 1978 we have played
466 games, won 270, lost 194 and drawn 2.
Q.16A What is the footy like?
A.16A Football on the Central Coast is different, theres no doubt about that. It is not the major winter sport, and there is not a huge commitment from players.
However, particularly because of the expansion of the league, the mindset has changed somewhat. There is a huge potential for the game, if its handled correctly and thats the way we want to go.
In reality, the football isn't bad.
Q16B Is your club licensed?
A16B It does not have a full license. We operate on footy days or special social occasions so long as we let the licensing court know.
Q17. Where do I sign????
A.17
You should contact the club president, Wal Bembic on
0428881811
. He is available at that number most times.
